What is Tequila? Mexico’s National Drink

Types of Tequila: Tequila can be classified into several categories based on its aging process and composition:

  1. Blanco (Silver) Tequila: Also known as white or silver tequila, it is unaged or aged for a short period (usually less than two months). Blanco tequila is typically clear and has a fresh and agave-forward flavor.
  2. Reposado Tequila: Aged for a minimum of two months and up to one year in oak barrels, reposado tequila has a smoother taste with hints of vanilla and caramel. The aging process gives it a light golden color.
  3. Añejo Tequila: Aged for a minimum of one year and up to three years, añejo tequila has a more complex and rich flavor profile. It acquires a darker amber color and often exhibits notes of oak, chocolate, and dried fruit.
  4. Extra Añejo Tequila: Introduced in 2006, extra añejo tequila is aged for a minimum of three years. It has a deep amber color and a very smooth, refined taste.

Agave Varieties: Tequila must be made from the blue agave plant (Agave tequilana Weber) to be considered authentic. There are different varieties of blue agave, and each one can contribute to variations in flavor. However, the Weber blue agave is the most commonly used for tequila production.

Tequila Regions: Tequila can only be produced in specific regions of Mexico, primarily in Jalisco, which includes the town of Tequila and the surrounding area. Other states, such as Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas, are also authorized to produce tequila.
